Choose deck to add value to your house

A deck is considered to be a flat surface, similar to a floor, that supports weight. However, decking is often focused on the outdoors and is favoured because it is often linked to the building and can be constructed from any wood such as composite timber, redwood or reclaimed timber.

If you want to add value to your home, installing a deck is a good way to do this. It can be part of the front or backyard landscape, a space for extended living in your house, or a beautiful patio or viewing area for a large building.

The choice of decking material is arguably the most important decision we make when building a deck. Different situations require different types of material and each option has its own unique aesthetics, characteristics and maintenance requirements. Deciding which material option is right for us depends on the individual’s expectations and the practicality of the terrace being built.

Of the various types of wood flooring, pressure-treated wood is the most common. Although not all wood is treated with the same chemicals, pressure-treated wood is infiltrated with chemicals containing insecticides and decay-resistant properties that help to enhance its natural durability. It is also easy to find, easy to cut and often easy to use. If you don’t like the natural tone of pressure-treated wood, staining can help with this and make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Cedar is often considered to be a better quality material than pressure-treated wood. Over the years, this natural wood has gradually weathered to a soft grey tone. Lightweight and easy to use, it is perfect for our DIYs. cedar also contains natural tannins which make it resistant to rot, infestation and decay.

There are various types of composite materials. The most common are low density polyethylene (LDPE) and wood together, while some products use a combination of rice husk, high density polyethylene and various other materials. Among the many benefits of composite decking, you will find that they adapt well to environmental conditions. Composites are also available in a wide range of colours, including many that closely resemble the look of wood.
