Low maintenance garden for 2021 guide!

With the approaching of spring, are you looking forward to relaxing in your backyard garden? Getting some sun, enjoying afternoon tea, or stargazing? A beautiful low-maintenance garden can extend your living space and allow you to be close to nature and enjoy life at home during the epidemic, but maintenance can require a lot of effort. Therefore, creating a “low maintenance” garden can reduce your labor and free up more time to enjoy it.

The ease of maintaining a garden is related to many elements. Here are four ideas:

1: Creating a stunning low-maintenance garden means partitioning it!

Regardless of how large or small your garden is, partitioning will make it more beautiful and tidy, and its maintenance will be faster and easier.

For example, flowers, vegetable cultivation, lawns, and areas without grass can be separated by winding paths according to your preference.

Moreover, you can planting plants with similar needs together for easy care. And understanding which areas of your garden get the most/least sun/wind/water and grow the right plants in those areas accordingly.

Idea 2:  Adding deck in your backyard garden

The less exposed soil in your garden, the fewer fragile plants you plant, the less maintenance you will need to do. But in order to avoid monotony, it is worth considering adding a deck in your backyard garden. Or you can extend the deck outward from the indoor/outdoor boundary to make the space more expanded. You can also put your furniture and barbecue machine on the deck and enjoy outdoor life.

In terms of material choice, composite decking is easier to maintain and clean compared to natural wood decking, making it a more affordable choice.

Idea 3:  Backyard Irrigation System

If you don’t have the time or are tired of watering manually, it’s wise to design and place an efficient automatic irrigation system in your garden. And adopting adjustable sprayers means you can change the water flow readily with the growth of plants or seasons change.

Not only does the system save you water, but it also saves you time and energy.

Idea 4:  Choosing low maintenance plants

These Australian native plants have evolved to adapt to our climatic conditions, so they do not need much care, like Banksia integrifolia, Callistemon, Correa Alba, Philotheca ‘Cascade of Stars’.

  • Mulch

Mulch is a protective layer that can be laid on top of the soil and/or covered around plants, just like a carpet. Its covering helps to reduce soil erosion, prevent weeds from growing, maintains moisture, and keeps soil temperature.

It is worth considering living mulches such as Myoporum parvifolium, Brachyscome, since they are more interesting and beautiful than inorganic mulch.

  • Succulents and cacti

They are usually drought-tolerant plants with thick leaves that can store water.
