Everything You Need to Know About Pool Fencing this Summer

eSummer is quickly approaching and, with it, hot weather that drives many of us to seek relief by going for a dip in the pool. If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard pool or are planning on installing one, you’ll need to ensure that the fence encircling it is in compliance with swimming pool fencing regulations.

But as important as pool safety is, adhering to regulations doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. In fact, the right fence can even enhance the look of your backyard.

Here’s our ultimate guide to pool fencing for this summer:

Pool Fencing Safety

According to Victorian law, any pools or spas (including inflatable pools) deeper than 300mm must be surrounded by a pool fence. This pool fence must fulfil several requirements:

  • The fence must be isolated in that it is surrounded by a four-sided barrier with no direct access to the residence or any other building.
  • The fence must be at least 1.2m high at all points.
  • Fence gates and barriers must be self-closing and self-latching.
  • The gate or barrier must not be propped open by any object as this is illegal.
  • There must be a perimeter of 900mm around the fence which is a non-climbable zone. In this zone, there should be nothing, including trees, pots, eskies and ladders, which may allow someone to climb over the fence.

You should also note that certain permits are required before building a pool, spa or pool fence. Furthermore, if the pool is filled with more than 300mm of water at any point during construction, a temporary fence must be placed around it.

Different Types of Pool Fencing

There are a variety of different types of fencing you can choose from to enclose your pool, each with unique benefits and styles. Which one you decide upon will ultimately depend on personal preference.

Steel Fencing

One of the most popular pool fencing options, steel fencing is affordable, durable, safe and stylish – as long as it’s installed properly. One of the best things about steel fencing is that it’s very easy to maintain; just give it a quick hose down every once in a while, and it will look good as new for years to come.

Aluminium Slat Fencing

If you love the look of timber fences but want something that is far more cost-effective and durable, aluminium slat fencing is the perfect option for you. Unlike timber, you don’t need to worry about it rotting wood or paint chipping away. Instead, once it’s installed you can practically forget about it other than admiring it.

Colorbond Fencing

Colorbond fencing is a great way of adding an art-deco element to your backyard. With so many styles and colours to choose from, you’ll undoubtedly find a Colorbond fencing option to suit your backyard’s design scheme. However, keep in mind Colorbond fencing is best used on a single side of the enclosure as a sort of ‘feature wall’, otherwise it can block out the sun and obscure the view of your pool.

Glass Fencing

If you truly want to showcase the glory of your pool and make it the centrepiece of your backyard, there’s no better option than glass fencing. With so many different glass fencing option, there’s bound to be an option that suits your personal preference. One of our favourite designs are frameless glass fence. These create a seamless and almost-invisible barrier between your home and your pool.

Not only is glass fencing extremely sleek and stylish, modern technology means that it is also extremely durable. This means you can trust that it will last forever. While they require a bit more maintenance than other fencing options, glass fencing definitely makes up for it in the element of glamour they can add to your pool and backyard.
