How to Maintain Your Automatic Electric Driveway Security Gate

Just like any other gate, you should make sure that you know how to maintain your automatic electric driveway security gate. These gates are a great investment and can do wonders to protect you and your family while also being convenient and stylish, but you want to make sure that you are properly caring for it so that it can function properly and that it will last you as long as possible.

Here are some of our top tips on how to maintain your automatic electric driveway security gate.

Visually Inspect It Regularly

It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how easy it is for even visual signs of rust to pass you by, especially when you are only seeing your gate from your car and it is a process that happens gradually.

When you’re doing a visual inspection make sure to:

  • Check that the sliding gate mechanisms are working properly. This includes checking the gate opener, metal racks, chain-belt, dents in the panels, electrical connections, and rollers and bearings.
  • Check that no bolts or screws are loose and, if they are, make sure to call a service technician as touching them could break them.
  • Check for any wear or damage on pivot points, bearings and brushes.

Keep It Clean

By cleaning your gate regularly, you can help protect it from rust and therefore help it to last longer. Simply hosing it down every now and then or using a mild household can do wonders in the long run to prevent severe damage from rust. If rust is a little more severe, you can usually get it off with a bit of sandpaper.

Waxing it every once in a while – even if only once a year – can also greatly help maintain your gate’s looks and functionality. It will also help to stop the finish from flaking off. It is also much cheaper than having refurbished if the finish becomes completely faded, rusted or tarnished.

Keep It Well-Lubricated

You should lubricate the important parts of your gate at least every six months. These are usually the parts that are involved when the gate moves automatically, like the chain, roller, pulley, hinge and screws. By keeping it lubricated, you will limit the friction involved when your gate moves and therefore it won’t wear out as quickly.

Lubrication of your automatic gate may depend on the type of gate you have – for example, if the moving parts are sealed you don’t have to worry about it. So make sure you always follow the manufacturer’s advice when it comes to lubricating your gate.

Don’t Neglect the Electronic Components

Just like its lubrication, the maintenance and care of the electronic components of your gate will depend upon the specific model and system. It is recommended that you regularly check the auto reverse function monthly. You can do this yourself by laying a piece of timber (at least 50mm in height) in the centre of where the gate closes. Allow the door to close and, if working properly, the gate should recognise the piece of timber as an obstruction and reverse when it hits it.

If the reverse function isn’t working, it’s imperative that you seek professional help as soon as possible. You should also avoid using the gate until it has been fixed as it can be very dangerous.

Get Professional Help

While all of the above tips are great DIY ways of maintaining your automatic electric driveway security gate, sometimes you won’t be able to fix it yourself. If you are having any serious troubles with your gate, it’s always best to contact a professional to make sure further damage doesn’t occur and that it is still safe.
