Visually Inspect It Regularly
It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how easy it is for even visual signs of rust to pass you by, especially when you are only seeing your gate from your car and it is a process that happens gradually.
When you’re doing a visual inspection make sure to:
- Check that the sliding gate mechanisms are working properly. This includes checking the gate opener, metal racks, chain-belt, dents in the panels, electrical connections, and rollers and bearings.
- Check that no bolts or screws are loose and, if they are, make sure to call a service technician as touching them could break them.
- Check for any wear or damage on pivot points, bearings and brushes.
Keep It Clean
By cleaning your gate regularly, you can help protect it from rust and therefore help it to last longer. Simply hosing it down every now and then or using a mild household can do wonders in the long run to prevent severe damage from rust. If rust is a little more severe, you can usually get it off with a bit of sandpaper.

Don’t Neglect the Electronic Components
Just like its lubrication, the maintenance and care of the electronic components of your gate will depend upon the specific model and system. It is recommended that you regularly check the auto reverse function monthly. You can do this yourself by laying a piece of timber (at least 50mm in height) in the centre of where the gate closes. Allow the door to close and, if working properly, the gate should recognise the piece of timber as an obstruction and reverse when it hits it.
If the reverse function isn’t working, it’s imperative that you seek professional help as soon as possible. You should also avoid using the gate until it has been fixed as it can be very dangerous.
