It also provides a unique way of displaying plants vertically while also allowing plants to spill over the top.
Add a Backyard Waterfall
If you have a flair for the dramatic, using your sloping yard to install a waterfall can add a striking feature to your garden. This may require a bit of work as you may need an electrician to provide your waterfall with power, but it will be worth it when the water starts running, adding visual and aural elements to your garden.
Step by Step
Sometimes we overlook the obvious, which is why you may not have considered adding steps to your sloping landscape. There are so many ways you can do this to ensure you’re incorporating your personal style to your yard. You can choose from so many different materials – concrete, timber, stone, or brick – and you can make it a straight up and down staircase, a winding path, keep it minimalist or add lots of flora around it. Depending on the width of your steps, you can even add pots along the side as a way of introducing new textures and materials to your garden while also utilising as much space as possible.
Layer it Up
Instead of having one large wall, you can have several smaller ones and use your slope to create several flat garden beds that cascade along the slope of your yard. This will also help to prevent drainage issues that can occur when you plant directly on a slope. It’s a great way to utilise space in a creative way while also adding intrigue to your garden.
Pave a Mini Patio or Terrace
You can use your slope to create a mini patio or terrace, which provides you with the perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of your garden or read a book while soaking up the sun. You can do this by paving a level close to the bottom of your slope and in front of the wall you may have already built. Then, place an outdoor sofa there or even a table and chairs for two.
Deck It
If you’re not much of a green thumb or don’t have the time or energy to maintain a lot of plants on your sloped yard, why not opt for a multi-level deck? You can still add some greenery by having some pots scattered around but it will also provide you with a fantastic place to entertain, especially in the warm spring and summer months. If you have a tree smack bang in the middle of your yard, you can use this to your advantage by building your deck around it. That way it can provide you with some natural shade as well as adding some drama to your deck.
